From one state tournament to another. I segued from badminton to basketball on Friday and caught three games at Kennedy, all in the 2019 division with three teams I had not charted. Due to technical difficulties when I got home this took awhile to post. Since it is closing in on midnight the recap will be Reader Digest condensed. All three teams previously uncharted lost. Two in running time, one saw a lead melt away in five possessions.
GAME 1
MN SUNS KIETZER 42, MN HEAT SMETANA 38
This looked like it was going to be an upset with the #4 Suns trailing at half time 21-15. The first time the Suns had the lead came at 36-35. The Suns rose with 14 points in a six possession swing late in the game. Jennifer Schaible ignited the rally with two straight 3s.
GAME 2
NORTH TARTAN COURY 73, MN STARS BJORGAARD 27
When a #1 seed faces a #16 seed this is what happens. NTC was up 16-2 after four minutes. This was Sara Scalia’s first time playing since her verbal with the Gophers and she got things going with two straight 3s in the first few possessions and NTC never looked back.
GAME 3
MN STARS NELSON 55, MN PREP 21
The #3 seed MSN had an uncomfortable first half with only a 20-13 lead. The Stars decided to press in the second half and came out with a more aggressive attitude. They also went small with their post players watching to start the second half. The result was a 35 point second half. Playing hard in both halves was Dlayla Chakolis for the Stars. The rest of her team played harder in the second half.
