ABOUT LAST NIGHT….Providence v Minnehaha
After a week caged up with a sick car, I was able to get wheels to get to round two of the Providence v Minnehaha battle in Plymouth. The Lions won the first round at Minnehaha on January 7. This time they pulled off another win, but it was touch & go. Perhaps this round could be termed “the Perils of Providence.” Yes Providence remained undefeated 84-72, but for over half of the contest the hosts had to hold on despite fouls piling up and missing opportunities at the free throw line. MA was almost pristine, going 38/31 at the line for 90.3%. Providence, who won the game, was only 13/21 or 61.9%. Four minutes into the game Beckett Greenway picked up foul number three. She was assigned the unenviable task of guarding Maryland-bound Addie Mack. At that point Providence was off to a much better start than previously up 11-6. Beckett did not exit the contest at that stage, staying in when probably most coaches would have pulled the hook. MA went on a 9-3 surge after that as Providence had to readjust their defense. They shifted back to the 2/3 extended zone that frustrated the RedHawks earlier in January. Eventually Beckett did go to the pine in the half, but did return very quickly thereafter. The RedHawks got out to a 28-22 advantage after a three by Amina Allen. Six unanswered Lion points tied it up. 3s by Sinae Hill & another by Allen brought it back to 34-28. At the break the visitors led 40-36.
The second half saw the foul situation go from bad to worse for Beckett as she picked up number four at the 16:20 mark. Again, she remained in the game. But the RedHawks stretched their lead out to 51-41. This would be their high-water mark. Act two was about to start for the Lions. And they would roar loud and clear. No surprise Maddyn Greenway was the spearhead of the turnaround. MA called timeout at the 14:42 mark. Maddyn stole the ball and converted &1 and the whole tied turned. Prior to that point the Kentucky-bound Maddyn Greenway had eight points. After that she erupted for 22 points. That kicked off a 14-0 run. The Lions moved in front with about 12 minutes remaining and forced another MA time out prior to that lead change. In the final 14:42 Providence outscored MA 43-21. That is two more than they scored in the previous 21 minutes and change. The MA offense dried up with Mack still chugging away with 15 points, but the rest of her teammates, who were picking up fouls of their own, only were able to score six points. The hosts were scorching at 122.9 pp100 the last 35 possessions going a sensational 19/27 on 2s (70.37). MA’s pp100 during that stretch limped in at 60.0. Providence scored every 2.84 touches while MA’s ballooned to 9.10. It should be noted that Allen picked up her fourth foul at the 8:49 mark plus tweaked her ankle. When she exited the contest, it was 59-55 in favor of Providence. That impacted the game flow as MA was forced to go to the thin bench. The night before MA had traveled to Dover-Eyota down by Rochester for a win. Did that scheduling back-to-back impact fatigue at all? Perhaps. The tank seemed depleted in the later stages of the game.
For the game Providence had a 97.7 pp100, MA 84.7. One stat that jumped out was the offensive rebounding %. MA was only at 18.8%, the lowest total I have charted recently. They had six o boards all day. Providence came in with a 30.6 with 15 offensive boards.
As usual the tent pole players were tent pole players. Mack finished with a game high 39 points and was a member of the 51 Club with 8 d stops and 4 distributions. It should be noted that Mack set up her teammates 18 times, a high for MA. The teammates didn’t convert. Maddyn Greenway ended up with her 30 points and got to the 41 Club with a 48. In addition to her points MG had 12 d stops and six distributions. She made the 31 Club alone in the last 14:42 right on the button. There was another member of the 41 Club for Providence: Hope Counts had 17 points, and 18 d stops and 7 distributions. She had a robust 121.4 for the day. The rest of the Lions down the stretch were gold with all five starters at or over 100 pp100. The bench also helped out since Becket Greenway and Counts both fouled out; Beckett at the 3:57 mark on a back court, 90-foot foul (the score was 72-63 at the time) and Counts with 1:55 left and the score 80-68.
With the Houdini like win and the calvary rushing to the rescue, Providence won the IMAC conference championship. But is it really a conference title if most of the conference does not even face the two leaders? There is no home and away with all five other partners in the conference. That is just as well. It opens up the schedule for stronger, bigger class competition for both Providence and MA.
DAY AHEAD
