ABOUT LAST NIGHT….7AA SEMIS

Revenge waited 365 days. Last year at Romano Gym on the UM Duluth campus Crosby-Ironton and Proctor were victorious as the #1 and #3 seeds. This year at Superior WI High school the script was flipped with #4 Pequot Lakes and #2 Duluth Marshall getting their revenge.

It all starts with the start. Both winning teams won the opening tip and then scored on that possession. PL scored on the left block after a ball reversal. DM had two opportunities to score during their first possession, since a foul occurred right after Morgan Lucero made the three-pointer.  Chloe Johnson then drove the lane and scored on the left side for a 5-0 after 30 seconds.

It all involves urgency. This is after all lose and turn in your uniforms. The winners yesterday had that urgency in action, body language (even when trailing in DM’s situation). They were quicker to loose balls. The losing teams were not totally consistent in this manner. Proctor was more active than CI however.

It all involves doing the little things. “For want of a nail” a proverb by Benjamin Franklin illustrates this point. And the little thing that was catastrophic for CI free throw shooting missing out on seven points there. Also a couple of chip shots at point blank shots off the block would have shifted the game to the left hand column. It was even more striking in the second game where Proctor only made 50% of their 18 free throw attempts. DM made 18 free throws and only muffed two. Remember free throws involve the same spot, no defense, and the ability to take your time (within reason). I am sure the Rails would have loved to have had nine more points on their side of the ledger.

CI trailed 36-20 in the first half of their game. They battled back and had a tie on their hands at 58 all. Emersyn Sullivan is the toast of Pequot Lakes as she knocked down a 3 from the right wing with 25 seconds left for the game winner. CI still had a chance. They took two time outs. The first at 21.6 and that led to a missed deep 3 attempt from Oehrlein. They got the rebound which led to a time out at 8.3. They had two more cracks with 3s, neither dropped.

DM rallied for their victory. The lead see-sawed between these two squads until Proctor had a surge breaking free from a 54 all tie to lead 66-58 capped off by four straight scores with eighth grader Ruby Hawsen delivering the last two on 3s. That forced a Hilltopper time out with 9:29. That apparently was enough to cool off the red hot Rails. For the next ten possessions they came up empty. Meanwhile, back in the lane, Johnson was surgically slicing and dicing the Proctor defense. By the time Proctor scored again DM had added 12 unanswered points. Up to the 66-58 lead Proctor was scoring at rate of 126.9 pp100 (the bench even better at 157.1). DM was a healthy 113.7 at that point. After that time out the Proctor pp100 plummeted to 41.2. DM jumped to 127.8.

Proctor 73 105.8 7/17 9/18 17/30 10/27 10/39.5 8

Only two players were able to crack into the 31 Club. In fact, they blew past that into the next two levels. But only one will have their season continue.

Tori Oehrlein concluded her high school career as a member of the 41 Club. She didn’t have much help.

CJ scored one point every 1.43 touches. Her shooting was sizzling at 19/25 in 2s, but she was able to get to the lane 26 times. TO scored every 4.23 touches with and even better 84.6% in 2s. But she was shut out on 3s on nine tries. TO was the top scorer and d stops in game one with 26 and 15. CJ had the most points in the night with 49.

What also happened last night terminated the “race” for all-time leading scorer between Oehrlien and Maddyn Greenway. Greenway will continue to add to her totals with what appears to be four more games.

Pequot Lakes and Proctor did not have a member. What they did have was balance. The Patriots had five players between 25 and 18. The Rails had five players from 15 to 30. Just missing out on the Club status was Peyton Walker with 30.
