#1 v #3 in 6AAAA & 6AAA have the impacts of state championship battles. Both winners last year were the #2 seeds in those sections and won the state titles. Benilde-St. Margaret’s is cast in the same roll this year. Wayzata is the #2 in 6AAAA this year and is on the road at Hopkins.
Can all 8 teams in any class be the #1 seeds in their section?
AAAA, AAA and A all have that opportunity. AA has two #1s eliminated so far: St. Clair from section 2, Crosby-Ironton from section 7.
We know a #1 seed will make it in 3AA, 3A, 5A, and 8A because of the dual #1 split section. That means only five more teams need to be #1 seeds to make the A tournament. That is the best bet right now.
The lowest seeds still alive are #8 Glencoe-Silver Lake in 2AA and #7 Ely in A. The Timberwolves get #1 state ranked Mountain Iron-Buhl as a reward. GSL sees Norwood-Young America.
Can all 8 teams in any class be ranked in the final coaches poll?
Here the answer is no for AAAA: neither Forest Lake or Blaine is in the top 10 and they live in 7AAAA. FL did receive votes, but not in the 10. We are guaranteed ranked teams coming out of 2, 3 & 6.
The answer is no for AAA x2: section 7 and 8 have match ups with no ranked teams. Rock Ridge sees Cloquet in 7, Little Falls sees Willmar in 8. We are guaranteed ranked teams coming out of 1, 4, & 6.
The answer is no for AA. Section 2 has no ranked finalists. We are guaranteed ranked teams coming out of 1, & 3.
The answer is probably for A. We are guaranteed ranked teams coming out of 2, 6, & 8.
