2026 Badminton Poll 8 (Weekly Review)

State tournament week awaits. Team title to be decided Wednesday; Individuals Thursday.

There are no polls herein. They were released earlier in the week.

THE REAR VIEW MIRROR

Is the past prologue? Last week’s No. 1 seeds in Minneapolis and St. Paul swept the singles and doubles titles. Can Harding’s Gao Zhia Vue do it again? She won the St. Paul singles crown—the second in her family (sister Panyia Vue won in 2014) and the first for a Knight since then—and enters the state tournament as the No. 1 singles seed. Johnson’s Gaonou Vang and Angelina Thao of Johnson also captured the St. Paul doubles title. Across the river, Roosevelt’s Mollie Anderson won the singles title, and teammates Abigeya Akalewold and Ella Fremstad repeated as doubles champions. Edina’s Daisy Hennington-Hoff and Ella Burke are the No. 1 doubles seed, and Edina is the top seed in the team tournament, seeking a fourth straight title and a 61st consecutive win.

Conference champions met twice—at the start and end of the week—and Roosevelt was involved in both. The Teddies lost 6-1 to Harding on Monday in the Twin Cities Championship, then fell 5-2 at Edina, leaders of the Suburban schools, on Friday.

THE ROAD AHEAD: STATE TOURNAMENT WEEK

The team state tournament gets underway on Monday with nine matches hosted by seeds 8 to 16. Winners of Monday’s matches will head to one of four sites for the Sweet 16 round followed by the quarterfinals. Action then shifts over to Edina for the semifinals and championship rounds on Wednesday. As stated previously the Hornets are looking to cement their legacy with their fourth straight title. All match action is to begin at 4 pm at all the sites. The second action on Tuesday and Wednesday will depend on the finish times, but generally about a half hour after the conclusion of the first match.

Thursday the individual tournament will take place also at Edina. Teams are expected to arrive between 3:40 and 4 p.m. (to avoid dismissal traffic jam). There will be a short coaches meeting beginning at 4 pm to emphasize procedures and timing. There will be 128 total matches taking place Thursday. Play is expected to begin close to 4:15. Action should wrap up as close to 9 p.m. as possible. Each team will have a table in the gym lobby to set up shop. Each team will be assigned a net for warmups too. There are 13 courts. There are 28 teams taking part in the tournament. That means nets will be shared.

Admission is free. There will be concessions on the upper deck level. Spectators are to view from the deck level except when action is in the north gym. Then fan access will be allowed to that back gym.

History could be in the offing. No Charter or Minneapolis singles or doubles has advanced to the elite eight round in a number of years. This year on the singles side both have players seeded in the top eight.

UNDEFEATED

Right now, only Edina has zero losses in three categories: team, first and second doubles. The Edina pair of Daisy Hennington-Hoff and Ella Burke remain unbeaten at first doubles. Teammates Caitlin Ashton and Reese Dakin also have not lost. Those two were paired midway through the season.

With Friday’s win over Roosevelt, Edina has reached 60 straight victories and is still chasing Johnson’s record of 75.
