Boys VB Out & About: Week 2: 3 Unbeatens Meet

WEEK 2

Even indoor sports are not immune to the vicissitudes of spring weather. Three sites had to cancel or postpone games and some teams were forced out because school was called off. Other schools managed to delay the start two hours and soldiered on. Today the epicenter of the boys volleyball world was Shakopee with three courts dedicated to varsity action. One of the courts was originally supposed to be held at Lakeville North, but Old Man Winter refuses to budge and that has created a back log of gym time throughout the region. Shakopee has just opened a new field house with an additional six courts. With their new performance gym and another auxiliary gym they now total 10 courts.  That is where I camped out to chart three teams that were 2-0 coming into the night. All three schools had their sisters get to the girls’ tournament this year. Only one team left without a blemish. Kasson-Mantorville, the lone non-metro team in the boys’ volleyball league beat South Suburban teams Lakeville North (whose girls won the AAA title) and Prior Lake. In the six sets I charted tonight five had the losing team reach or go beyond the 22 point mark showcasing how competitive the matches are. As the night wore on the rallies became longer and more intense. However, the scores at the table were off from my tabulations. In one match a team won by three, not two; and in two sets the winners ended up with 24 points, not the 25 needed to win.

KM had better ball control which led to a more consistent attack. The KoMets also had serves that were frequently in the narrow window between the top of the pin and the top of the net. Speaking of serving PL showcased a couple of jump servers.

Due to the late hour I will quickly recap the action and provide the stats tomorrow at some point in the morning.

LAKEVILLE NORTH 2, PRIOR LAKE 0
(25-22, 25-23)

The Panthers rallied from a six point first set deficit (19-13) to beat the Lakers in the first set 25-22. LN closed with a 12-3 run. However the Panthers only earned two of their last 15 points. PL actually out earned LN in the first set 15-6, but gave away 19 on errors, including four on serves. PL led by as  many as five in the second set (11-6) and led as late as 21-19 when a Panther time out stopped a four point run. Directly thereafter a missed serve opened the door for a LN four point run. LN did out earn PL 11-9 in this frame. Evan Peterson led LN with 8 kills.

KASSON-MANTORVILLE 2, PRIOR LAKE 0
(25-22, 28*-25)

KM gave the Lakers a case of déjà vu with a sweep that went longer. If you notice there is an asterisk in the second set. That is because my numbers showed KM winning the second set at 25-22 again, but the match continued. There may have been a replay point and I didn’t catch it. Just like in the LN game PL out earned the KoMets in both sets 14-10 and 14-12. Just like in the first match PL had a six point lead to start set one (7-1). KM got right back into the game with a run of six KM took the lead for good at 16-14. The Lakers held off set point four times (24-18) before a hitting error ended set one. PL once again led at the start of set two (6-3) but a missed serve opened the door for five more points (9-6). After a missed KM serve, the KoMets scored the next nine for a combined 15-1 mega run. PL again held off set point, or what I thought was set point, five times. The match ended officially when Lukas Rockenschaub served up an ace.

KASSON-MANTORVILLE 2, LAKEVILLE NORTH 0
(24*-22, 24*-18)

The KoMets capped a perfect night with two more set wins over LN. KM rallied from an 11-8 deficit in set one with a run of five (13-11) which was halted after a LN time out. LN was able to squeeze at least one point off their next three services and led 20-18. A four point surge by KM put them in front to stay and also forced the last Panther time out. KM rode that momentum at the start of the second set with six straight points (6-1). They never trailed in this set and led by six as early as 14-8.

check back tomorrow. I will send out a tweet when the numbers and details get posted. my twitter is @kjasr1
