Nou Chee Yang of Johnson won the 2018 singles title with a two set
win over Jumy Miko of Harding. The #1 seed Yang did not lose a set the entire tournament. There was only one set where a player scored more than 16 points against her today—-that came in the second set in the quarterfinals against Jansaree Na of Washington.
The sweet 16 and quarterfinals featured a few upsets: #5 seed BeBe Say of Washington fell to Burnsville’s Makayla Haddorf; #2 seed May Garvey of Central fell to #7 seed Tu Lor Paw of Como Park.
With the winn Yang made history as the first player to go back to back in state titles with a doubles and singles.
CHAMPIONSHIP
Nou Chee YANG 2, Jumy MIKO 0
(21-15, 21-13)
Yang was highly effective in siding out—-a 76% clip to Miko’s 39%. Yang prevailed in the other big categories like winners (27-13) and service points (21-7). This was Yang modus operandi for the entire tournament. While others were pushed to longer sets, Miko had two three setters today, Yang relatively breezed by in two. That meant she had fresher legs and her energy stores weren’t depleted.
In perhaps the most interesting feature of this match came in the second set. All 14 of Yang’s winners came on Miko’s racket side of the court. There were no winners on the left side. That doesn’t indicate what was happening. Yang was pushing Miko, left, left, left. This created space on the right and Miko had a hard time closing that gap as the bird dropped.
In set one Yang broke free with a run of four and a run of three (7-1) on her third and fourth service. That put Miko in the hole 9-3. Four straight hitting errors by Yang got Miko right back in it at 12-11. There were no runs by Yang the rest of that set, but Miko didn’t close the door on any of the four remaining Yang serves.
Yang got the early advantage with a three point run (4-1) and didn’t look back. This was the set of the 14 right side winners. most on the drop or more correctly the cross court drop. The back breaking sequence came with a run of three and then another three (6-1) on Yang’s sixth and seventh serve (14-7). Yang had handcuffed Miko for six straight services during this stretch. With a three stroke clear Yang had her second consecutive state title, but first singles title.
